Monday again

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 10:24 PM
And teaching a God-awful e-mail class. *shudder*

But one nice thing, Herschel called me because I had something in particular I wanted to talk to him about tat I didn't want to put in writing. So that was nice.

Aside from that, not much to be said about the day at work.

Afterwards I ate dinner at a new restaurant in towm, it's a Mexican/Japanese place. I ate from the mexican part of the menue, a mushroom taco, and shrimp quesedilla. Quite yummy and very cheap. Then i picked up my laundry and came home.

Forgot to mention that Lynn called me last night, that was nice.

Took a shower and washed my hair so I wouldn't have to do it tomorrow. Because tomorrow, when I'm free, I have other plans which I'm not at liberty to write about. But wish me luck!

Called Mom, she's well.

Around 9:00 I suddenly realized we were out of cat food, so I went out and got some, and something for myself for desert.

And pretty soon I'm going to bed. I didn't sleep well last night because I'm still letting the cats in, and we're still all getting used to the setup. Once everyone settled down though, it was lovely. They surround me with warm furriness all night.

Bed now.

Gratitude List:

1. My plans tomorrow are going to work out!

2. My cats.

3. The turtle tank continues to clear.

4. The day went rapidly.

5. Friends.

6. The weather was nic today.

Dear Sir.

Yes, I know it's annoying that the Jewish Federation Community Library has moved. However you still have to come to the library to pick out the video you want and check it out. We cannot deliver it to you. I'm sorry that it's now a twenty five mile drive in LA traffic instead of just across the street from you. We still don't deliver. And the fact that you check it out for your class every semester still doesn't change the fact that we don't deliver. Complaining about how it was a stupid decision to merge the libraries still doesn't change that fact.

Thank you and good day.
my favourite thing is when library users (usually over 35), type in their e-mail addresses into the address bar and then get angry because their "e-mail doesn't work!!!!!" or they expect you to tell them their password.

but my top pick is the incessant amount of customers who repeat the same scenario:
"Your accent is very interesting. Where are you from? Your English is very guuuud". Or when they try to hit on you by falling to stereotypes like "I love Slavic women. They are so fragile and just want to be defended." (WHAT?)

Am I being too sensitive? Perhaps. It just makes me feel a bit like a freak every time they point out the accent thing.

It's that glorious time of year when we reunite with loved ones (we neglected all year), stuff our faces to excess, and pass out in front of the TV. Perhaps a recalibration of the thanksometer is in order. A spin-off of the popular GivesMeHope.com site, this community invites you to document moments of kindness, generosity, and pure human love.

Despite its mainstream appeal, Thanksgiving is not for everyone. There are those struggling with food disorders, for whom this day causes endless conflict. There are the cash-challenged, who can't afford the gluttony we've grown to expect. There are the lonely, who don't have loved ones nearby. And let's not forget the vegetarians, who decry the animal cruelty. But there's one more group we often overlook: the terminally lazy! This community of lazy vegetarians offers easy recipes for an animal-friendly feast.

Just in time for holiday shopping season, this fashionista community brings you the world of haute couture in the form of sumptuous photos, video clips, and candid commentary. There's also a sugary sprinkle of mainstream movie discussions and debates on such pressing social issues as manicure styles and celebrity colonics. If you need a break from the daily grind to indulge your girlie side, this is twinkly pink on steroids.

Student Mofo

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 1:57 AM
Dear random Student mofo,

I know I likely shouldn't have an opinion on your rambling as I was eavesdropping, but your idiocy is like a bullhorn in my ear. Be glad I rant online instead of to your face. Be glad I have forgotten your face in the faceless masses that pack the halls of this college. Do not try to exude and illusion of being smart by thinking libraries should have funding cut during these financially tough times. Do not think you can write an entire 10 page research paper off Wikipedia. Do attempt to think beyond yourself in your cushy I-can-have-7-dollar-lattes-every-day mooching-off-parents life to the people that use the library regularly. I admit that am much like you in that I live with my parents, I have unfettered internet access, I have used Wikipedia for unimportant things often (and looking beyond it into the sources cited on each page if used for anything mildly serious, which is an action I do not belief you have the common sense to do), and I rarely need library resources... but when I DO? I REALLY do.

So here is to hoping that you find yourself like many people I've either seen or been told of: relying on a library to do everything from look up local job listings, write up your resume, check your email, do research, and maybe even find books to be a form of *gasp* entertainment. And many libraries have entertaining selections that actually expand beyond books; something I thought I should be so kind as to point out on the off chance you have Litteratura Unappreciation Syndrome (Offline/Non-digital Text Variant) and incapable of seeing reading of the written word as fun.

To much to hope for? Likely. But I can still smile wickedly knowing that the teacher you currently have instantly fails any paper that cites Wikipedia as a reference, and even has this warning on the syllabus.

~ A Librarian Fangirl

PS: No love for you mofo, so more love to spend on the librarian who is so awesome she told me about a plethora of scholarships offered in the area. I will likely ask her about this again once I am off PSEO. If I save money on my education because of a librarian? I shall look back on your faceless memory and laugh more heartily still motherfucker.

PPS: Here lies my first stop after getting my membership approval email. Thank you very much administrative rockstar. ^_^

Quiet Sunday

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
Mom and Oldest Brother came in in the afternoon with the remaineder of my pay, and we went out to brunch at the diner again. Then afterwards they took me into Flushing and dropped me at Petland Discounts, where i finally bought the new airstone for the turtle's filter, and also got some Turtle Clear for the water.

Walked around Flushing for a bit, then came home. Cleaned the turtle's filter and put in the airstone, and added more water and the Turtle Clear, so I'm being a good turtle-mommy again. Going to try to change the filter every Sunday now and keep adding the Turtle Clear until I get the water clean. She's watching me as I type now... yes, my turtle recognizes me, since I'm the only person who feeds her on a regular basis.

Went out later and got myself a can of Slim-fast for dinner, after such a late brunch it was really all I needed. Then before I came home I walked down to the big park and walked around. Got a little depressed, but I called The Kid and talked for a bit, and then when I got home and turned on the computer I had an e-mail from someone special, so I feel better.

I let the cats into the bedroom to sleep with me last night, to try and get rid of the mice. It was nice having them there, I think I'll keep doing it.

Gratitude List:

1. The Kid.

2, The big park.

3. Friends.

4. God never closes one door without opening another.

5. My turtle.

6. My cats.

Professors?

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 4:25 PM
Hi all, Guess this is my intro post along with a question for those who have gone or are going to San Jose State U...
First my Intro:
My name is Katrina, I graduated in 08 with a BA in history and another major in anthropology. I wanted to take a year off between going back to school (Also to decide which kind of graduate school I wanted, history, Forensic Anthropology, or Library). I want to focus on references and archives.

In my off time, I do a variety of activities but my big one is ballroom dance but I also am thoroughly obsessed with musical theatre as well.

My question to those of you who are going or have gone to SJSU:

Who are some good professors and who are some I should watch out for?

Hey girls,

I am expected to graduate in the next March, and I am wondering if I need to start applying for jobs now, or I have to wait until I get my degree. I am interested in working at both public libraries and academic libraries.

I have applied for two jobs about a month ago, but haven't heard anything from them. I don't know they didn't consider my application because I am not eligible, or I just applied too early.

I shopped today!

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 11:52 PM
Anyone who knows me knows how much I hate shopping for clothing, and how much I hate spending money for clothing, and therefore will understand what a major victory it is that today I went out and bought three pairs of pants and a shirt! From Target, not a cheapo store! I spent $80!!!! Wow!

But actually first I went to my meeting, which was great. The topic was "closure", and was very appropriate.

Then I got a ride to Target, and I did my shopping, then I walked home, and stopped off to get my face waxed on the way. First time I'd done it by myself, without The Kid. It feels very nice.

Came home and puttered on the computer for the rest of the evening. Mom and Oldest brother called, I'm seeing them tomorrow when they bring me the rest of my pay, since the check's now cleared.

And for the first time in awhile I went to the Starsky and Hutch chat on ning. Had a really good time.

So all in all it's been a very good day.

It's only been three weeks since he walked out... am I supposed to be recovering this fast? It's disconcerting...

Gratitude List:

1. I feel pretty good.

2. Had a good day.

3. Nice pants, in a smaller size than before.

4. Plans for the future.

5. My program.

6. Meeting new people on-line.

Was thinking about people...

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 4:20 PM
Dear LJ,

Yes, I was thinking about boys again. I haven't thought about boys in a while. But it came to my mind as last night, before our dance team performed at the talent show, I was kind of flirting with another talent show competitor. Not on purpose. Just as it is my nature to introduce myself to people I find intriguing.

And then when I met Orlando to give him a ticket to record the show for free, he smiled at me in that sweet smile he always smiles. I haven't seen a guy smile at me like that in a while. And I kind of melted.

So, I was thinking about guys! I had a talk with Reem the other day about men. So, usually when I say this people think I'm crazy, but sometimes, I can look at a man and tell in that instant that I am going to know him. Its like... its like looking at someone you already know, but you know you haven't met them yet. Its so weird. And it works every single time.

I thought about how I haven't experienced that in a while.

I don't know if this thing happens much when it comes to women. If it doesn't work for women, its my fault. I don't think I tend to allow myself to be mentally open towards women like I am toward men. I'm working on that. I'd like to connect this way with all people, not just men.

So last night during the talent show, I guess I practiced. I was chatting with this one girl and when the show was over, I met her friend. Her friend was rather odd... She was super chipper. Now, I normally love and am intrigued by chipper people, but she was chipper to an almost scary level. You'd see this type of character in a movie. You'd never think you'd meet them in real life.

I didn't run away from her. I tried to calm myself down. Usually, when people talk to someone who freaks them out, they start freaking out themselves internally. I was trying not to do that. Its hard.

The way I want to be with people is a hard way to be. Some people are naturally gifted.

Library school UIUC

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 2:03 PM
So I am applying to UIUC for fall 2010, got told that I have to take the GRE because of my GPA... has anyone gotten into UIUC after being told they have to take the GRE? Any advice would be wonderful. I am really nervous and would live to here from anyone that has gotten into UIUC, or my second choice Dominican U. How hard is it to get into either? And get a job after? I would really like to stay in IL after the MLIS. Thanks!

Very Quiet Day

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Fortunetly nothing much happened at work. I got a call-back from the union legal plan, and learned some stuff, which was mostly reassuring, though not totally. There was one pain in the butt member of the public, but he didn't become areal problem.

Aside from that, not much of anything.

Came home and got a yummy Philly cheese steak sandwich for dinner. Spoke briefly to The Kid but she was busy, says she'll call back later. Hopefully before i go to bed! Called Mom, she's still doing pretty well with the treatments. One week down, five to go.

I should say, there is something igoing on which I can't post about, at least not at this time, not even locked. But life is better than it was.

Gratitude List:

1. Quiet day.

2. Two day weekend coming up.

3. friends.

4. That which I can't post about.

5. Family.

6. Yummy Philly cheese steak.
No mofo here, just a massive brain fart.

I knew it was time to go home when I asked a fellow ref librarian how often the Investor's Business Daily came out.

She pointed to "Daily" and said "Does this help you?"

Duh.

I've been giggling ever since. I can't wait to tell that one on Monday.

Job Vacancy

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Hello idiot mofo

Do not approach me when it is raining and I am wet and p*ssed off and having to work very late, to ask me about the job vacancy. I do not have anything to do with the job vacancy, I do not know you and I do not want to know you

Do not get upset when I tell you I do not know about the job vacancy and sure you just wanted to say "hello".

I just wanted to say fuck you except you're the type to complain. Now fuck off and die.

(Edit: yes that's right this idiot approached me on the street and when I told him I didn't have anything to do with the job or job selection he kept on. Than asked about other random stuff too.)

Aside from that, nothing new

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Aside from the locked post below, nothing happened today. After I got back from taking care of that, I called Mom and Oldest Brother, nothing new. Mom had another treatment today, but I spoke to her beforehand so I don't know how it went. I'll call tomorrow and find out.

Called [info]mashfanficchick and talked a bit but she was on her way out going somewhere for the weekend.

So I just spent the rest of the day with the cats. Went out at 5 and ate at the diner. Came home, called The Kid, she couldn't talk then but she called me back later.

And that's about it. I'm sort of depressed, euphoria from yesterday worn off, and down from the high of this morning. *sigh*

Going to go to bed early, I didn't get enough sleep last night. I sort of took a nap earlier today, more like just drousing, but I need to get some real sleep.

Gratitude List:

1. Got what I needed done.

2. Yesterday.

3. Friends.

4. My cats.

5. Family.

6. Everyone this morning was nice and helpful and sympathetic.

Any Moomins / Tove Jansson fans?

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 11:54 PM

I've made a stamping community for Tove Janssons Moomin books; [info]moomin_stamp
Feel free to check it out and post an application :) It's not necessary that you have read the books, because I've made character bios to all of the characters.

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  3. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  4. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  5. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.
